India's Shanti Sounderajan loses Asiad Silver

Indian Olympic Association confirmed on Monday, Dec 18th that Santhi Soundarajan had failed the gender clarification test and her Doha Asian Games 800m silver medal has been taken away. Santhi had failed the gender test after winning the medal and was disqualified for the 1500m event. 

There are no obligatory gender tests during events approved by track and field's international ruling body, but athletes may be asked to take a gender test. The medical evaluation panel generally includes a gynecologist, endocrinologist, psychologist and internal medicine specialist.

An Indian athletics official who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media said Sounderajan almost certainly never had surgery to change her gender.
