India manage a 41-run lead

India 414 bested South Africa 373 in the first innings by 41 runs in the final test at Newlands, Cape Town.

Anil Kumble and S Sreeshant helped India in gaining this hard fought lead by claiming four and two wickets respectively. The hosts were bowled out with 2.3 overs still to go for the end of day.

In the morning on Jan 4th, Thursday, South Africa continued adding up runs to their overnight score of 144/1 until Kumble and SreeSanth started getting wickets out one by one. Graeme Smith was out when he was just six runs away from his hundred, caught by outstanding catch by Sehwag.

Smith along with Amla added 159 runs and Jacques Kallis along with Ashwell Prince compiled 83 before Sachin Tendulkar got Kallis out caught near the boundary.

Shaun Pollock and Mark Boucher then managed 69 runs to take the team closer to India's 414 before Pollock was caught by Sourav Ganguly for 31 when Zaheer Khan was bowling.

The next innings will be played on Friday (05-01-2007).
